Christopher L. Tucci is Professor of Management of Technology at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). He received the degrees of Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences (1982), Bachelor of Arts in Music (1983), and Master of Science in Computer Science (1984) from Stanford University. He also received the degree of Master of Science in Technology & Policy (1992) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Ph.D. in Management from the Sloan School of Management, MIT, in 1997. His prior work experience was as an industrial computer scientist at Ford Aerospace, where he was involved in developing Internet protocols and applying artificial intelligence tools to industrial problems.

Professor Tucci joined EPFL in 2003 where he teaches a doctoral seminar in Technology and Innovation Management and masters courses in the same subject. He has also taught strategic management at MIT and has taught a global strategy module for engineering managers in the Tufts University Gordon Institute.

Professor Tucci's primary area of expertise is in how firms manage technology to gain competitive advantage. He is interested in technological change and how waves of technological changes affect incumbent firms. For example, he is studying how disk drive manufacturers survived different technological transitions over a twenty-year period. He is also studying how the technological changes brought about by the popularization of the Internet affect firms in different industries. Professor Tucci is also interested in strategic alliances, especially those used in technology development. He has conducted a survey of European research and development (R&D) managers and has analyzed how strategic technology alliance partner characteristics interact with ongoing behavior, such as "trust-building," to influence alliance performance.

He has published articles in Management Science, Strategic Management Journal, Research Policy, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Journal of Engineering and Technology Management, Journal of Product Innovation Management, and IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, and served as an ad hoc reviewer for the Strategic Management Journal, Management Science, Communications of the ACM, Interfaces, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Journal of International Business Studies, Sloan Management Review, and IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management. He is the co-author (with Allan Afuah) of Internet Business Models and Strategies, the first MBA text book in the area of e-business strategy. In 2000, he was elected to the Executive Committee of the Academy of Management's TIM (Technology & Innovation Management) Division. In 2003, he was elected Program Chair-Elect (leading to Division Chair) for the TIM Division.
