Christopher L. Tucci is Professor of Management of Technology at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). He received the degrees of Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences (1982), Bachelor of Arts in Music (1983), and Master of Science in Computer Science (1984) from Stanford University. He also received the degree of Master of Science in Technology & Policy (1992) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Ph.D. in Management from the Sloan School of Management, MIT, in 1997. Before going back for his PhD, his prior work experience was as an industrial computer scientist at Ford Aerospace, where he was involved in developing Internet protocols and applying artificial intelligence tools to industrial problems.

In 2003, Professor Tucci joined EPFL, where he teaches courses in Technology and Innovation Management, Design Thinking, Digital Strategy, and Research Methods. Prior to EPFL, he was on the faculty of New York University where he taught Technological Innovation & New Product Development, Foundations of Entrepreneurship, Business Policy & Strategy, and Competitive Advantage from Operations in the MBA Program. He has also taught strategic management at MIT and has taught a global strategy module for engineering managers in the Tufts University Gordon Institute.

Professor Tucci’s primary areas of interest are business models, open innovation, crowdsourcing, and dynamic capabilities. For example, he has studied how disk drive manufacturers survived different technological transitions over a twenty-year period. He is also studying how the technological changes brought about by the popularization of the Internet affect firms in different industries.

He has published articles in, among others, Academy of Management Review (AMR), Management Science, Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Annals, Research Policy, Communications of the ACM, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Journal of Engineering and Technology Management, and Journal of Product Innovation Management. His 2012 article “Crowdsourcing as solution to distant search” won the Best Paper of 2012 for AMR, which was ranked the #1 scholarly journal in the categories of Management and Business at the time. He was the TIM Department Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management and is on the Editorial Board of Organization Science. In 2004, he was elected to the five-year division leadership track of the Academy of Management’s (AOM) TIM Division. In 2010, he was elected to the leadership track of the SMS’ Strategy & Entrepreneurship Division. In 2013, he was elected to the AOM’s Board of Governors.

Dr. Tilo Peter’s main focus is on technology and innovation strategy, specifically on non-patent methods of protecting a firm’s knowledge assets. He is interested in applied research with a strong connection to industry and executive management. He has an MBA in Management of Technology and a diverse experiential background in small business and start-up companies over a variety of industries, everything from computers to maritime operations to wine making. He has been active as a consultant and researcher in the aerospace industry, participating the European Space Authority study on Emerging Markets and Future Trends in Telecommunication. As member of a team working with SES Astra, he was one of the authors of the that was prepared for the Government of Luxembourg. He was also a contributor to the Study on Opportunities for Satcom Solutions Providing a Return Link to GNSS Applications, part of the LuxLAUNCH Program, a national support measure for innovation and research in Luxembourg. As a project manager and researcher, he has provided research assistance to a variety of companies in the aerospace industry, including ND SatCom, Nokia-Siemens Networks, SES Astra, and EuroTeleServ.

Tilo has been active with several start-up companies in the computer technology, high-tech lighting, and advanced machine tool industries and has founded two businesses in the recreational and service industries. He is a licensed ship captain, having operated commercial vessels and luxury yachts in the Atlantic basin, and a scuba instructor.

Although he is of Swiss descent, he grew up in California and has resided and worked in six of the United States as well as five other nations prior to relocating to Switzerland in 2005 in order to pursue his goals in higher education. He now divides his time between Zurich, where he lives with his wife Jeannette, and Lausanne.

Dr. Gianluigi Viscusi (PhD) is research fellow at the Chair of Corporate Strategy and Innovation (CSI) of the EPFL, working with Prof. Christopher Tucci on the Future Enterprise FP7 research project (http://www.dbi-community.eu/approach). His research interests include information systems planning and business modelling, public policy and technology Innovation, e-Government, information quality and value, service management and engineering, social study of information systems. He has been consultant on e-government planning, policy design, and implementation roadmap for international organizations such as, e.g., the OECD.

Currently, his research focuses on three main streams: crowd-driven innovation, social value of open government, and translational research in innovation and technology management. His research has been published in a range of books, conference proceedings, and journals such as, e.g., Government Information Quarterly. In 2010 he has co-authored with Carlo Batini and Massimo Mecella the book “Information Systems for eGovernment: a quality of service perspective” (Springer, Heidelberg).

Giada Baldessarelli

Giada Baldessarelli is a PhD Candidate under the supervision of Prof. Christopher Tucci since October 2013. She holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Management and Production Engineering from Politecnico di Milano (during her studies she spent 6 months in Germany at TU Munich). Before joining EPFL, she worked for 2 years at Accenture Management Consulting, as process analyst and change manager.

Her research focuses on interorganizational routines and creativity. She studies how interactions unfold during collaboration across boundaries in creative projects. As part of her PhD, Giada has spent 10 months at Stanford University – Center for Design Research, where she attended classes on design thinking and management. Giada is also a collaborator at SparkLabs (www.sparklabs.ch), an association between EPFL and ETH Zurich with the goal to educate students through the principles of Design Thinking.

Albina Khairullina is a PhD Candidate under the supervision of Prof. Christopher Tucci since September 2016. She holds a M.Sc. in Economics from Perm State University (Russia) and M.Sc. in Management from HEC Lausanne. Her research focuses on strategic aspects of intellectual property (IP) and IP assessment for companies. Particularly, she is interested in patent data and innovative cycles. In a collaborative form with IP team at Nestlé, she is developing a complex framework for the intellectual management in the context of Open Innovation. As a part of her research, Albina participates in a joint study with prof. Neil Thompson from MIT X-Lab.

Dr. Myrna Flores

Myrna Flores

Dr. Myrna Flores is the co-founder and president of the Lean Analytics Association (LAA) and visiting scholar at the College of Management in EPFL.
She has over 20 years of experience collaborating as internal or external consultant in different manufacturing and services organizations, leading several initiatives related to Lean Thinking, Business Process improvement, Six Sigma, Supply Chain, Change Management, Open Innovation, Digital Transformation and Human Centered Service Design.

She carried out her Post-doc at the College of Management in EPFL leading the Lean Product and Process (LeanPPD) FP7 European project from 2009 to 2013. She completed her PhD in 2006 at the Politecnico di Milano studying Open Innovation Models to enable Industry-University collaboration for innovation. She obtained her Master’s Degree in Manufacturing Systems in 1999 and a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Monterrey Tec (ITESM) in 1996.

In 2004, Bettina Bastian joined the CSI team as a PhD student at the CSI: her research interests include energy issues, network industries and innovation adoption.

Luca Berchicci

Luca Berchicci

Luca Berchicci worked as a Post-Doc researcher of Management of Technology at the Chair of Corporate Strategy and Innovation of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) from 2005 to 2007.

He obtained his Ph.D. in Innovation Management at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering of Delft University of Technology. The thesis focuses on development of radical products in different organizational settings with particular attention to the influence of environmental issues into the innovation process.

Mary Jean Bürer

Mary Jean Burer

Dr. Mary Jean Bürer joined the College of Management of Technology at EPFL as a Research Fellow between 2014 and 2018. She worked on policies & business models in the energy sector for the Chair of Corporate Strategy and Innovation, and the governance of the green economy for the Chair of Green Economy and Resource Governance at EPFL.

Dr. Mary Jean Bürer earned her doctorate degree in Economics at the University of St. Gallen (UNISG) in Switzerland. Her doctoral thesis work was about the influence of climate and energy policy on private equity finance in the clean energy sector. She also earned a Masters of Engineering (M.E.) degree in Manufacturing Engineering for Advanced Transportation Systems from the University of California, Los Angeles. She has worked for various UN agencies; several research institutions such as EPFL, UNISG, Imperial College and LBNL; as well as various governmental and non-governmental entities in the area of climate and energy.

Alan Cabello

Alan Cabello

Alan has been a PhD student at EPFL from 2011 to 2014 and fellow researcher until 2015. His work focuses on human-centered product, service and business model innovation following the principles and tools of Design Thinking.

Together with Prof. Tucci, Alan’s work in this field led to the foundation of SparkLabs (www.sparklabs.ch), an association between EPFL and ETH Zurich with the goal to educate the innovation leaders of today and tomorrow through the principles of Design Thinking and build a community of like minded experts and alumni.

Alan is currently working as Innovation Program Manager for Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS).

Amin Dehdarian

Amin Dehdarian Amin received his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Tucci in August 2017. His research focuses on modeling the dynamic barriers of governing socio-technical transitions to sustainable energy systems. Especially, he is interested in the rebound effects, early lock-in to inefficient technologies, and emergent policy resistance, by combining insights from complexity theory, evolutionary economics and transition theories. Amin holds a B.Sc. in petroleum engineering (specialized in reservoir engineering) and an MBA (specialized in System Dynamics and organizational behavior), and has worked as researcher for one year at the electrical research center, all in Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran. Before starting his PhD, he worked for two years in the energy sector as a management consultant, and contributed to the implementation of the People Capability Maturity Model (PCMM) for the first time in the country.

Heidi Gautschi

Heidi Gautschi

Heidi was a Research Fellow at the Corporate Strategy and Innovation Chair 2014 to 2017. She currently works as Research Associate at IMD Business School (Lausanne).

Heidi earned a BA in Philosophy from Tufts University, an MA in Health Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and a DEA and PhD in Information and Communication Science from the University of Paris X. Her main area of interest is communication technology both past and present and its interaction with society. Prior to joining EPFL as a Research Fellow in August 2014, she was an assistant professor of communications at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA.

Thomas Langenberg

Thomas Langenberg

In July 2005, Thomas joined the CSI chair to pursue his doctoral research and obtained his PhD in Summer 2007 under the title “Information Exchange in User Communities: A study of Individual Level Determinants and Firm Level Effects in the US Snowsports Industry.

After finishing his PhD with us, Thomas worked with McKinsey & Company in Munich. After that, he followed an entrepreneurial path. He co-founded halalati.com, a company in the German space for Facebook Marketing Apps. He is a co-founder of the stylondo media group, which runs digital magazines for home decoration and design as well as magazines in the home building space on the web, Facebook, Flipboard and native apps. Thomas serves as an advisor to the German engineering company lni.de in the field of time and access security solutions and is a writer for the corresponding tech blog on time and access security trends. Thomas still keeps his consulting roots and works with nunatak.com, a small consulting boutique for digital strategies in Munich as an associate partner.

Giovanni Liotta

Giovanni Liotta

Giovanni Liotta has been a PhD Candidate at the Chair of Chair of Corporate Strategy & Innovation (CSI) under the co-supervision of Prof. Christopher Tucci and Prof. Anu Wadhwa (Imperial College Business School). After defending his PhD in November 2016, he joined the Chair of Technology and Innovation Strategy (TIS) at EPFL as post-doc. His research interests include entrepreneurship, venture capital financing and cleantech market dynamics.

Giovanni holds a Bachelor and a Master Degrees in Management and Production Engineering from Politecnico di Milano (Italy). During his studies he spent one year at Wageningen University (The Netherlands) and EPFL (Switzerland) as an exchange student. He wrote his master thesis on venture capital investments in open source software startups.

Lorenzo Massa

Lorenzo Massa

Dr. Lorenzo Massa joined the CSI chair as as Research Scientist between 2013 and 2017. He is now Assistant Professor at the department of Strategy and Innovation at Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU), Rand visiting professor at the University of Bologna (UNIBO) where he teaches both in MBA and Executive programs.

At EPFL he was co-leading the Swiss National Science Foundation research grant named ‘Business Model Dynamics’, a three years research project involving a network of four universities (EPFL, ETHZ, USI and UNIBO) and focusing on business model innovation in incumbent firms. He completed his Master and Ph.D. in Management at IESE Business School, focusing on research at the nexus between Business Model Innovation and Sustainability. He holds graduate degrees with distinctions in Mechanical Engineering from the Dublin Institute of Technology (B.Eng.) and the University of Genoa (M.Sc. Eng.). As an Engineer he worked for SMS Demag in the Iron and Steel making industry, in the design of Blast Furnaces and continuous casting processes. He is author of several teaching case studies on business model innovation and sustainability (IESE Publishing) which are currently used in IESE MBA as well as Executive MBA programs. His research on the Business Model has been published on the Journal of Management and the Oxford Handbook of Innovation Management.

Gianluca Misuraca

Gianluca Misuraca has been a Research Associate at the College of Management of Technology of the EPFL. His research interests are in the area of Foresight Intelligence with focus on the future of e-Government and Mobile Internet services.

Between 2005 and 2007, Gianluca has been the Managing Director and Scientific Coordinator of the Executive Master in e-Governance organized by EPFL in collaboration with other prestigious institutions worldwide. He then joined the Chair of Corporate Strategy and Innovation, as a Research Associate until 2009.

Vincent Nassar

Vincent Nassar

Vincent Nassar joined CSI in 2008 after having completed a double Masters in Sports Science and more than 10 years of experience in teaching and coaching sports.

He obtained his Phd in Autumn 2012 with the title “Creative-Learning Innovation Cycle – CLIC: Work motivation and organizational creativity”.

The purpose of his PhD project was to assess the feedback impacts of innovation on various levels of the organization – organization culture, managers and collaborators –
and to develop a process enabling further stimulation of the innovation engine. Thus he developed the conceptual model “CLIC”: Creative-Learning Innovation Cycle.
Analyzing the CLIC model through case studies should lead us to identify and assess the impact of feedback mechanisms of innovation on different levels of the company.

Deep Parekh

Dr. Deep Parekh received his PhD in 2016. His dissertation, entitled “The Beacon: A New Framework for Business Model Reconfiguration for Complex Enterprises”, focuses on business model transformation.

Deep Parekh is a serial entrepreneur and has been founding and managing his own companies for the last 10 years. His latest venture is Mannequin Labs, a Lausanne based research and innovation oriented spinoff from his previous company Equus Group, a management consulting services firm based in New York and Brazil, where he served as Founder and Managing Partner. Deep has also founded and ran a software company called PlanCentral in 2000, which was subsequently sold to business partners. He has worked at the intersection of supply chain management, business strategy, and innovation for the past 20 years, and has served in management roles at Unilever, Ernst & Young, and Booz Allen.

Joana Pereira

Joana Pereira

Dr. Joana Pereira joined the Chair of Corporate Strategy & Innovation (CSI) at EPFL in 2013 and obtained her PhD under the supervision of Prof. Christopher Tucci in 2017.

Joana holds a bachelor and a master degree in Business Administration from Catolica Lisbon School of Business and Economics (CLSBE), Portugal. During her studies, Joana spent two semesters abroad, at WU Wien, in Austria and at Goa Institute of Management, in India.

Before starting her PhD, Joana was a research and teaching assistant at CLSBE in the Strategy and Marketing chairs for two years. Additionally, Joana worked as business analyst for the Portugal Telecom consultancy department; and as HR consultant for AlterVia. Joana is also co-founder and advisor of Mindflow, a Portuguese start-up in the area of training and gamification through mobile Apps.

Jeffrey Petty

Jeffrey Petty

Jeffrey Petty worked at (CSI) as a research associate from September 2005 to August 2008. He obtained his PhD at HEC-UNIL under the title “A Study of Venture Capital Decision Making” in September 2008.

Jeffrey has twenty years experience working in the government and private sectors and has an MBA in international management from Thunderbird.

Andrei Villarroel

Andrei VillarroelAndrei Villarroel worked as a PhD Student at CSI from 2004 to 2008. He obtained his PhD under the title “Open Source Corporate Strategy (OSCS): Unveiling the Firm’s Open Sources of Competitive Advantage” in July 2008.

He holds a master’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University, and a communications systems engineering degree from EPFL.

Vareska van de Vrande

Dr. Vareska van de Vrande joined the CSI team in 2008 until 2012 as a postdoc researcher.

Her research focuses on several aspects of corporate entrepreneurship, such as the use of different organizational forms for external technology sourcing, corporate venture capital investments, strategic alliances, joint ventures, and mergers and acquisitions.

Andreas von Vangerow

Andreas von Vangerow

Dr. Andreas von Vangerow was a PhD student with Prof. Chris Tucci at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne 2010 to 2015. Andreas is currently working at McKinsey & Co.

His research interests include service innovation, servitization, dynamic capabilities, and the knowledge-based theory of the firm. Before joining EPFL, Andreas received a Master Degree in Business Administration and Economics from the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, and a Bachelor of Commerce Degree (Honours, First Class, First Division) in Information Systems from the University of Auckland.

Olivier Waeber

Olivier Waeber

Olivier Waeber was a PhD candidate at the Chair of Corporate Strategy and Innovation. For his dissertation he developed a process framework that will help companies to implement or change the degree of product modularity in their products.

He holds a bachelor degree in Environmental Engineering and a master degree in Management, Technology and Economics both from ETH Zurich in Switzerland. After graduation he started working as a Business Analyst for Zühlke Management Consultants AG.

Yang Yang

Yang Yang worked as a PhD Student at CSI from 2004 to 2008. She obtained her PhD under the title “e-Innovation and Financial Services” in July 2008.

Yang Yang obtained her Bachelor Degree in Computer Science from the Harbin Institute of Technology in China and she received in 2004 her master degree in E-Business from the University of Wyoming, USA.

Cristiano Zazzara

Cristiano Zazzara

Dr. Zazzara worked as an external PhD student from 2004 to 2008 with Prof. Tucci. He received his PhD in July 2008 under the title “The Link Between Innovation and Finance: Evidence from Survey Data”.

He has written a book on financial modeling using Excel with McGraw-Hill Italy and is well published in various journals of financial economics, such as Review of Financial Economics, Journal of International Banking Regulation, Journal of Financial Stability, Research in Banking and Finance.
